In the second phase of the research a Kick-off workshop
was held in Nainital (second week of April, 2004) at which a logframe was developed
to guide the activities in this phase. All project partners except East Africa
were represented. The meeting was hosted by one f the project partners, CHEA,
and the sites where CHEA has been working were visited.
During this phase field measurements were continued in
sites in Senegal, Uttranchal, Nepal, and Tanzania and a new site was started
in Mali. A data base was set up to systematize the data from all these sites.
Assessments of sustainability were made at many of the sites in addition to
the carbon estimates. National workshops were held in Tanzania, Senegal, Uttranchal
and Nepal. Training materials were developed and the hard and software for use
in the field were refined.
Research materials and findings were presented at various
academic and policy forums (see publications list).
The Scientific Director spend several months at the Centre
for Ecology at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) to link with
research being done there on carbon forestry, baseline development and bio-energy/forestry
linkages.
A side event was presented at CoP10 in Buenos Aires http://www.iisd.ca/climate/cop10/enbots/.
For copies of the presentations please see (old) news
items on this website. All project partners were present and an internal
project planning meeting was held at the same time.
An Advisory Committee was appointed and met in April 2005
to give advice on the research and capacity building efforts of the program.
